My name is Rachel Gai and I grew up in Des Moines, Iowa with my five siblings. I moved to America from Sudan when I was three years old. I am 22 years old now and attend Iowa State University studying Business Marketing and Apparel Merchandising and Design.
I currently don’t have a job outside of my creative craft. Although, school sometimes feels like an outside job; I spend most of my time creating at home. I enjoy sewing, drawing, painting, and designing. I’ve always had an artistic spirit ever since I was in elementary school. I remember that I used to make YouTube music videos and share them with everybody. I would dress up, do my makeup, record myself, edit the video in cool effects and post them on Youtube. I think that’s when I realized I wanted to go into the entertainment industry. I would later realize that it was the fashion industry that I wanted to pursue. I used to make my own outfits and take lots of photos. People always told me how they liked my clothes and most of the time I made them so I kinda knew that was something that I should look into.
I started my business on this random day in early October 2017. The name came to me out of nowhere and as soon as I said it out loud I knew it would be a great name for a brand. I figured if I wanted to start a fashion line I had to go big or go home. So I decided to start a fashion brand that exemplifies who I am as a person. What inspired me the most to start my own fashion brand was seeing all these other people succeeding in the fashion industry. I would just tell myself, “If they can do it, I can do it.” I just had to start somewhere. That’s how Rachel Reloaded was born. I created Rachel Reloaded to express myself through fashion and to also help other people express themselves through fashion. I make custom clothing, provided alterations and styling tips for my clients. I think my favorite part about my business is that I am doing what I love. I can exercise my creative mind and brand myself however I want. I don’t think I see myself doing anything else in the future.
After I graduate college I hope to move to New York to continue working on my brand and my fashion line. My overall goal is to design for Rihanna and eventually become a personal designer and stylist. I want to design clothing that makes women feel great about themselves. I think that’s very important in a society where women are told how they should dress in order to receive respect. My style changes depending on how I feel and you can see that in the clothing that I make. In the future when I generate enough profit to create and merchandise my own line I would want my line to be more high end and extravagant. My favorite designers are Alexander McQueen and Pierre Balmain. I strive to create garments that are as beautiful as theirs. I have lots of learning to do but I am definitely down for the journey!
