15 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS: GIFT GUIDE PREFACE

Posted by FABIOLA BENAVIDEZ on

For those of you that didn’t get all of your Christmas shopping done over black Friday (myself included) shopping for your friends + family becomes a red-flagged priority as soon as the calendar reads “December 1ST.”

BUT NOT TO WORRY, the dream team is here ☽

Tomorrow we will be starting our series of 15 days Christmas, where we will be highlighting local vendors + their products for the ultimate locally-sourced + handmade gift guide.

We will be giving you alllll the deets about our vendors, their biz, and they may *wink wink* be giving away some of their product.

Additional Details will be released tomorrow :-)

In the meantime, we wanted to explore the reasons why you should shop + support local this Christmas season!

WHY SHOP LOCAL

I recently came across a tweet that went viral on Twitter.

“Probably an unpopular opinion: It’s hard to “shop local” and “support small businesses” when I could buy 3 shirts in the city, for the price of 1 boutique shirt.. “ (RP: @tehyaHansen12)

At first, I was kind of... angry? borderline insulted by this bold statement.

But I remembered that I used to think exactly like this just two years ago!

Not always - but often times when we aren’t a fan of something, we aren’t 100% educated on it.

So grab your pencils + papers because I’m here to school ya’ll on small businesses + why they’re rad.

SPENDING MONEY LOCAL MEANS MONEY STAYS LOCAL

of course, we had to talk about the dolla dolla bill, ya’ll!

Choosing to spend your money locally - whether it be local restaurants or boutiques, means choosing to make an economic impact on your community.

Don’t believe us?

According to research conducted by the New Economics Foundation (NEF) more than 2 times the amount of money spent locally, stayed locally.

The same research has been covered by other media outlets like Times and Forbes Magazine.

According to Amy Hartzler — director of communications for the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies —

“For {about} $100 spend at one of these {local} businesses, for example, $68 stays in the community.”

YOU BUY FROM A CURATED + UNIQUE COLLECTION

One of my favorite things about WTD is how unique + eccentric everything is. There truly is a little bit of everything for everyone.

If you didn’t know, the majority of our shopping for the store is done in Chicago Illinois!

Our girl boss — Jade Dirks, actually attended school in the Windy City. From the city looks to working at a local boutique, to this day she chooses to do all of our store shopping in Chicago.

The vendor show she chooses to buy from features vendors from all over the globe.

Not only does this mean that you get quality pieces- since they’re hand-picked, but you get to shop from pieces from all around the world without having to travel too far from home.

WE ALSO SUPPORT LOCAL

Another thing we pride ourselves in is showcasing local vendors —vendors that hand-create products like candles and jewelry locally within the state of Iowa. We host about 15 different local lines and we’re always on the hunt for more.

So, whether it be a bath bomb for a 3-year-old or a custom necklace for a mother-in-law, there’s bound to be something for our dreamers.

YOU GET STYLED IN THE PROCESS

While each one of our stylists' tastes in fashion is different, we love + celebrate fashion and individuality and can style just about anyone for any event or occasion you may have.

I went ahead and asked Jade if our personal styles had anything to do with why she hired us.

“What a person wears to an interview definitely stands out to me so it definitely contributes. Each one of you has a unique style, yours (Fabi) is edgy + thrifted, {whereas} Hannah’s is definitely J Crew meets classic. For myself- it’s all over the place.

{Overall,} I like that all style is represented in the way we each dress”

YOU HELP A BUSINESSMAN (IN THIS CASE BOSS WOMAN) RUN + WORK HER DREAM JOB

What started out as a lil pop up at local farmers markets is now a two-store affair. (Jade, please don't hate me for using this picture lol)

Every item that has come in this store, Jade herself picked out in hopes to have a fashionista wear it with pride.

Not only does Jade get to run her dream job, the stylists (aka the dream team, aka us employees) we get to be creative, learn the ins and out of a small business, and work at one of the raddest places ever.

Each one of us is involved with the fashion industry in one way or another-

from graduating with an apparel merchandising degree, being fashion students, to finally being fashion photographers (in the making of course ;) this store has molded + shaped us into the humans we are today and have set sights for the humans that we want to be tomorrow.

With that being said,

SHOP LOCAL

S U P P O R T local- every little thing counts with small businesses.

Even if it means liking one of our photos on Instagram or reading a (hopefully) persuasive blog post ;)

Happy December 1st and keep on dreamin' on.

- Fab.
